The Northern Nights
- Philip Pullman

I've finally found some time to read another book (Although it may seem that I was completely swamped with work..I just didn't get a book ) Th Northern Lights, It was filmed as the movie "The Golden Compass", The title for the movie is an understatement. It' an interesting book, set in a world very similar to ours except with subtle differences (This is given in the book). And humans have something called Daemons with them from birth.

A young girl called Lyra, who lives in Oxford in a college, comes to know of something called Dust that scholars and her "uncle" are researching. And she is sent to London, with another person (Who happens to be her Mother) and she lives there and learns that her Mother is involved with a group that cuts away peoples daemons (Their daemons are attached to them, but not physically. Separating them was unheard of completely and was considered a heinous crime) But before being sent away she is given a device like a Compass that answers her questions, called the "Aleithometer" .

Lyra escapes from there and meets her old friends the Gyptians. The Gyptians decide to go to the North Pole to rescue their children who were kidnapped. Lyra goes along and the rest of the book outlines her adventures and how she is a part of a prophecy.

She befriends a mighty polar bear (They can talk) who was exiled from his kingdom and is involved in an amazing adventure.
The book is very interesting and different. The world he creates in gripping and the Polar bears create awe (No really).

The book ends with a wonderful finish and leaves the whole story unfinished. And go read the book, now I need to get the next book from somewhere........
